The sitter was a daughter of the publisher Werner Laurie. The portrait probably dates from 1927–8. An earlier portrait of the same sitter was exhibited at the Goupil Gallery Salon, 1926 (163), as ‘Jean Werner Laurie-A Sketch’, and possibly another portrait of her was included in the Summer Exhibition of Modern Art, Goupil Gallery, June 1931 (174), as ‘Jean’; both were unsold at the end of the exhibition. The artist also lent a portrait of Miss Laurie to the British Council's Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg, 1936 (764).
A portrait on board, 13 1/2×11 in., of Miss Betty Werner Laurie was shown at the Leicester Galleries in February 1929 (13) and reappeared at Sotheby's, 17 February 1954 (111).
